It was a Tuesday in early September 2024 when my phone started buzzing before I'd finished my coffee. Two messages. First, a fleet customer whose GMC Sierra had thrown a P0420 code. Last year, I would have looked at that $410 quote and felt clever. Then I flashed back to March 2023, when I bought just such a "bargain" converter for a Chevy Silverado. It failed within four months. The customer came back, the labor was repeated, and by the time I tabulated the refund, the reinstall, and the customer's lost patience, that cheap converter had cost us about $1,200 more than the $1,150 option would have. The Sierra owner needed his truck back in 48 hours. I had two days to finalize the parts order — no time for the extended vendor vetting I'd normally do.
I went with Vendor C's $1,150 converter. Not because I love spending money; anyone who says that about a procurement guy is lying. I chose it because I'd lived the $410 alternative, and the spreadsheet had the scars to prove it.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. Emissions enforcement is stricter. Catalytic converter theft and aftermarket quality vary more than they used to. Components like radiators and filters are being engineered with different materials and tolerances than a decade ago. The execution of parts sourcing has transformed — you can verify a manufacturer's engineering footprint in minutes if you know where to look.
But the fundamentals haven't changed. Know who made the part. Verify the supply chain. Calculate total cost, not unit price. Document everything. Those principles were true when I started, and they'll be true long after I retire.
What I'd Tell Anyone Starting in Parts Procurement
- Ask "who makes this?" before you ask "how much?" A brand is a promise. A manufacturer is a verifiable fact.
- Get three quotes. Not to pick the cheapest — to understand the structure of the market.
- Track every order, including the failures. Your mistakes are the most valuable data set you'll ever own.
- When someone asks what happens if a catalytic converter goes bad, tell them the full story. The few minutes you spend explaining consequences are cheaper than the hours you'll spend defending a rushed repair.
The Sierra got its converter. The Toyota got its Denso 221-3212. The oil filter shelf now carries hengst with full documentation in our system. And my spreadsheet — my obsessive, line-by-line spreadsheet — collected three more rows of hard-won knowledge.
That's the whole point, I think. In this industry, trust matters. But trust needs verification. Hengst earns it by being an actual manufacturer. I earn it by checking, documenting, and remembering the expensive lessons so I don't have to learn them twice.
