What matters more than the brand name is the filter's bypass valve setting, media area, and anti-drainback valve. If those match what the engine was designed for, the filter will do its job. If they don't, you can get oil pressure drops on cold starts or a dry start after the car sits for a week.
I'm not an engineer, so I won't pretend to have lab data. From a workshop perspective, my rule is simple: if the vehicle manufacturer specifies Hengst or Mahle for the original filter, use that exact cross-reference. If a store brand crosses to the same OEM number, it can work—but I've opened enough cheap filters to know that the internals aren't always the same. If a shop quotes you a water pump filter for a normal gasoline engine, I'd ask for the OEM part number before paying.
If you drive a diesel truck or run a fleet, the water separator on a fuel/water filter is a real maintenance point. But that's not a water pump filter. For most passenger cars, the coolant side has no filter to change, and the fuel side may not have a water separator either.
I once searched for a water pump filter on a VW because a friend swore the car had one. It didn't. The quote said water pump and filter—two separate items—and somewhere between those words, my brain turned it into one part.
Does a 4L60E Universal Transmission Mount Actually Fit?
I wish universal meant one mount would fit every 4L60E. It doesn't. The 4L60E was placed in trucks, vans, and passenger cars, and the mount itself changes with the crossmember and the vehicle's ride height. A universal mount can be a good solution for a custom swap, but it's not a buy-it-without-measuring part.
I learned this the expensive way. I ordered a universal 4L60E mount for a project car, saw the word universal, and didn't measure the original. The mount was too tall. The transmission sat high, the driveshaft angle was off, and the shift linkage stopped lining up. It cost me a weekend and a replacement mount.
Before you order, check three things: the bolt spacing on the transmission, the height from the crossmember to the tailshaft, and the load rating. Universal mounts often come with multiple bolt-hole patterns, so bolt spacing can be adjusted. The height is less forgiving. If you're swapping a 4L60E into a vehicle that didn't come with it, some trial fitting is expected. If you're replacing the mount in a factory vehicle, use the VIN and get the factory-style part. That's the honest version.
How to Put Rings on a Piston Without Damaging Them
When I first started building engines, I thought a piston ring was a simple spring. I was wrong. The first ring I broke cost me an hour and a $35 part, and that was the cheap lesson. Before you start, check the ring lands for carbon. If the grooves are dirty, the new ring won't sit flush and you'll get oil consumption. Here's the sequence I use now:
- Clean the ring grooves and verify you have the right set. The oil ring goes first, then the second compression ring, then the top compression ring.
- Check for markings. Many rings have a T or UP. If the ring has a chamfer on the outer edge, that side usually faces up. Inverting a second ring can burn oil.

- Lower the ring into its groove so it sits flat.
- Space the gaps around the piston. I want to say 120° apart for a three-ring set, but don't quote me—your factory service manual will give the exact spacing.
